What We Believe

We are a church that stands on the solid foundation of the Word of God, teaching that we receive salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, being freed from sin, death, and the power of the devil. This saving faith is a gift from God to people, given as the Word of God is preached through Law and Gospel, and the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper are administered according to how Jesus Himself commanded and instituted them. These gifts of Word and Sacrament give life to people, leading them to respond in faith, praising and thanking God, and serving their neighbours in love.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith —and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
- Ephesians 2:8-10

We believe that the Bible is God's Word, which reveals to us all we need to know about God and His saving action throughout history. We believe that the statements in the Book of Concord - the statements that the Reformers wrote to defend what they believed, taught, and confessed almost 500 years ago - are a correct interpretation of God's Word, and we walk together with other Lutheran churches who also believe this.

We believe that God is One God in Three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We affirm the historic creeds of the church which summarize all Christian teaching: the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed.

We believe that God's love, mercy, and grace shown to us in Jesus Christ is all we need for this life and the next. This grace alone puts us into a right relationship with God as we trust in Jesus through faith. This faith leads us to serve one another, and those in the community around us, with the same love that God has first shown to us.

We believe that when we gather for worship, we gather to receive God's amazing gifts of His Word and His Sacraments. God serves us with these things, and we respond with the deepest activity of our heart and faith, offering praise and thanksgiving through prayer and song.

We believe that God gives all Christians gifts that are intended to serve and build up one another. These are spiritual gifts such as mercy, leadership, helping, administration, and more. These are gifts that all Christians have because of the Holy Spirit's presence in them, and they are all used to point to the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Concordia is a member of Lutheran Church—Canada, a confessional Lutheran church body with congregations all across Canada. We are affiliated with LCC because we hold a common confession with other congregations and we partner together to do some work that we could not otherwise do on our own.
